E13 – Senior Living in Japan
The United States and Japan are culturally different, but both countries are challenged with a lack of available community and households designed for long-term care of the aging population. In parallel to the growing development of the senior living building sector, the Japanese culture instinctively drives the design of these architectural spaces, some of which are different and more advanced than their American counterparts. As the recipient of the 2018 AIA AAHF George J. Mann AIA Travel Prize, Tuttle traveled to Japan for 27 days and visited more than 15 senior living facilities of varying housing typologies to gain an international perspective on how culture has influenced design implementation. Come hear what she learned.
