Patient Care Ergonomic Solutions

E39 – The Adult Care Population: Mobility is Medicine

“Mobilization is medicine.” This profound statement is based on evidence. Early mobilization is found to decrease the length of stay in the ICU and decrease the occurrence of hospital-acquired pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and bed sores. Healthcare design can facilitate mobilization and patient safety through use of ergonomic design principles, techniques, and technology in design. This presentation will describe how patient care ergonomics can be integrated into healthcare design. Ergonomic interventions will be discussed in relation to patient mobilization and safety. A video of ergonomic interventions in use will clarify the relationship between ergonomic interventions and design, as well as their relationship to the mobilization of patients.
