SUMMARY:E28 &#8211\; Beyond Reading the Room: Why Some Spaces Work&#8230\;and Others Don&#8217\;t
DESCRIPTION:Amenity spaces are central to the identity\, marketability\, and daily life of senior living communities\, but their success depends on more than appearance alone. A beautiful room may remain underused if operations\, programming\, location\, acoustics\, visibility\, comfort\, or resident routines are not aligned. Conversely\, a modest space may become deeply meaningful when the physical environment\, human factors\, and lived experience come together in the right way. This session will use multiple senior living communities to analyze selected amenity spaces through the Model of Place: Physical Environment\, Human Factor\, and Experience. The presenters\, an interdisciplinary team consisting of an architect and a systems strategist\, will examine spaces that work well and spaces that are less successful\, identifying the design and operational conditions that contribute to each outcome. Examples will include dining venues\, gathering spaces\, health/ wellness areas\, activity destinations\, outdoor amenities\, entries\, corridors\, or other shared neighborhood spaces. Together\, they bring perspectives from environmental design\, operations\, hospitality\, resident engagement\, and experience evaluation. Through real-world case studies\, attendees will learn a practical diagnostic method for determining why amenity spaces succeed\, struggle\, or fail to achieve their intended purpose. Using the Model of Place\, participants will learn how to identify the interaction of environmental conditions\, operational practices\, and resident experience\, allowing them to make more informed design\, programming\, and investment decisions.
