SUMMARY:E08 &#8211\; Late Check-Out: When Senior Living Has to Outlast the Hospitality Illusion
DESCRIPTION:The Boomer generation enters senior living after decades immersed in environments designed to impress – boutique hotels\, curated lobbies\, farm-to-table dining and aspirational lifestyle branding. In response\, senior living has borrowed heavily from hospitality design to meet those expectations.  But there is a fundamental distinction: hotel guests check out. Residents don’t.  Hospitality design is optimized to win over guests in the first 90 seconds – the arrival moment that signals\, “this is it.” Senior living must succeed every day after. The features that impress on move-in day can quietly fail years later\, as residents navigate those same spaces daily. What reads as luxury in a transient setting can undermine dignity\, safety and long-term comfort in a permanent one.  This panel brings together a national senior living operator and their long-standing design partners for an honest conversation about where hospitality influence has genuinely elevated the sector\, where it’s created a disconnect between promise and lived experience\, and what it takes to design for sustained life\, not just initial appeal.  Their relationship is the point. This isn't theory\, but a working team reflecting on lessons learned together across a national portfolio\, project by project\, and willing to articulate what the industry often leaves unsaid.
