E17 – Resident Reality Check: Are We Getting Senior Living Right?
This continuing education course offers a unique, resident-centered perspective to provide a deeper understanding of life within senior living communities. Through recorded interviews, firsthand narratives, and real-world case studies, this interactive panel will explore how residents experience daily routines, care services, and the social and emotional fabric of their communities. For years, owners, operators, and design professionals have worked to improve senior living environments based on industry standards, regulatory requirements, and personal expertise. But are these improvements truly enhancing the lives of those who live there? This session invites attendees to pause and listen directly to the people most impacted by these decisions. We'll examine how elements such as staff interactions, physical environments, programming, and care delivery are perceived and valued by residents themselves. A panel of experts will reflect on these insights and offer practical strategies for incorporating resident feedback into both existing communities and new developments. This course is ideal for professionals seeking to create more responsive, empathetic, and effective senior living environments. Participants will be challenged to re-evaluate assumptions and consider new ways to elevate resident voices in decision-making, with a focus on improving quality of life and person-centered care.

Sharing feedback from residents, operations, ownership, and showing examples of design evolution, we will illustrate how roadblocks were turned into opportunities to build trust. Highlights will include how the community's unique sense of place was recognized as a differentiator to be enhanced. Valuable insights questions that should have been asked sooner, operational flexibility, resident involvement, and the constraints of tight timelines, an existing structure, and local zoning authorities will be addressed. We will share how specific design improvements; new amenities, open flexible spaces, natural light, faux lighting, biophilic design, and landscape upgrades generated excitement, improved resident wellbeing, and overcame resistance to change. Achieving that success takes thoughtful goal setting and intensive programming prior to lines being put on paper. Setting of goals by all team members, understanding operational functions, critically reviewing financial situations, and addressing the target market are all necessary to a meaningful master plan for the project. The plan should provide a smooth design initiation, which, in turn, should support an operational model that is resident-oriented, staff-efficient and sustainable. But the plan should also be intuitive, allowing residents and staff to immediately understand how the spaces function. After occupancy, the operations team must be fully cognizant of the advantages of the design and its ability to provide state-of-the-art senior care. A post-occupancy evaluation completes the circle by providing an in-depth review of the result of the process.
