E08 – Late Check-Out: When Senior Living Has to Outlast the Hospitality Illusion
The Boomer generation enters senior living after decades immersed in environments designed to impress – boutique hotels, curated lobbies, farm-to-table dining and aspirational lifestyle branding. In response, senior living has borrowed heavily from hospitality design to meet those expectations. But there is a fundamental distinction: hotel guests check out. Residents don’t. Hospitality design is optimized to win over guests in the first 90 seconds – the arrival moment that signals, “this is it.” Senior living must succeed every day after. The features that impress on move-in day can quietly fail years later, as residents navigate those same spaces daily. What reads as luxury in a transient setting can undermine dignity, safety and long-term comfort in a permanent one. This panel brings together a national senior living operator and their long-standing design partners for an honest conversation about where hospitality influence has genuinely elevated the sector, where it’s created a disconnect between promise and lived experience, and what it takes to design for sustained life, not just initial appeal. Their relationship is the point. This isn't theory, but a working team reflecting on lessons learned together across a national portfolio, project by project, and willing to articulate what the industry often leaves unsaid.
